It’s been a good year for black metal. A lot of high quality releases, a lot of variety and styles. From all corners of the globe. It shows the appeal of the genre, and here we have a newcomer, from France, the country of bands like Deathspell Omega and Celeste : Penitence Onirique.
With the diversity in black metal it is sometimes hard to forget how the genre started, namely icecold and evil as hell. P.O. seem to go back to these early days, writing epic black metal anthems as cold as the Fjords. And they are pretty damn good at it. From the get go, you get swept away with their blast beats and tremolo picking. It’s really grand in scope and vision, with no song clocking in under 8 minutes. They remind me a lot of Wiegedood, because they assault you all the way through the album, but there’s enough diversity and melody to keep it interesting, instead of just becoming a wall of noise.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a hell of a lot of racket, but it’s guided, it has a purpose, it’s beautiful and ugly at the same time. It’s no surprise they were picked up by Les Acteurs De l’Ombre, since they seem to have a patent on epic French black metal.
My favourite song is Carapace De Fantasme Vide. Because every epic black metal album needs an even more epic closer. After the emotional onslaught you just witnessed, it’s only fair they make sure to pummel you in the ground one last time, just to be sure. I’m especially in love with the riff here, It guides the song ever so gently. Glorious. ( The video starts at 38.41)
So there you have it kids. You love epic black metal, you’re gonna love this. If Wiegedood was your jam or you like anything from LADLO, you’re gonna go crazy over this. An extra credit to the packaging btw, beautiful stuff, an extra reason to buy this one!
