This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. I had heard of Eleanora because they released a split with the mighty Amen Ra, and was instantly hooked on their brand of apocalyptic sludge and hardcore. It was very similar to Amen Ra but more chaotic, more youthful exuberance, and I absolutely loved it. They released an EP some time after, which I ordered immediately and it confirmed what I already knew : these guys were the real deal, playing with a lot of emotion and real passsion for their craft.
Fast forward a year, and we finally have their debut album. And boy does it live up to expectations. Four songs of total annihilation, bleak, raw emotion dripping off every song. It’s all I ever wanted to be honest, and they deliver. I received it today, and already listened to it 5 times. It’s really that good. No wonder Amen Ra chose these guys for a split. They fit the Church Of Ra profile perfectly, and although they are not a direct member of this collective, they summon the same spirit and intensity as them.
My favourite song is Telos. There are many reasons for this. It’s the longest song on the album, clocking in over 16 minutes. It shows their prowess at writing songs that pummel you into the ground at first, before showing you why they did it. There’s great build-up, and a superb understanding of building tension and releasing it at the right time. It’s just a perfect example of the mayhem they bring on a grand scale. There was no youtube link at this time, so check it out on bandcamp.
To wrap it all up, this is a really strong release from a band that just seems to keep getting better. They are continuing the tradition of great Belgian metal bands, and should get as much appreciation as possible. This will be on repeat on my stereo for months to come, so don’t sit on this one and order it now. There will be no disappointment, only darkness.
